Celebrating "Badass" Grandmas
I was remembering Nana Alfa today when I read a Huffpost article called
13 Real-Life Badass Grandmas Will Make Your Day
The grandma w the protest sign reminds me of the time Nana Alfa brought her ironing board, iron & wrinkled clothes to the Mexicali offices that managed the electricity as protest for them jacking up the rates 3-4 times their normal rates in one month. She a hundreds of women from the city plugged their extension cords & irons up to administration's outlets & ironed clothes jacking up their offices electric bill! Alfa Bernal was a true "badass."
Alfa Bernal had a pretty terrible childhood full of strict rules, corporal punishment & the extreme responsibility & limitations poverty brings with it in the 3rd world.
I know she loved music & if could have danced & partied it up she would have. She make her own "ponche" at Christmas time from her own fermented concoction of fruit peels, sugar water & patience. I would call it equivalent to a "hot toddy." And just like Nana Alfa, it was STRONG!
